Under 18s competition:

Create a zine about the river Lagan!

Deadline: Friday 30 August 2024

PS2 is inviting you to contribute to our WATER WORKS project, which celebrates the river Lagan. To get involved, we’re asking you to create a zine!

A zine is a short, DIY book, often used for personal reflections and to gather images and short pieces of writing.

How to make your zine:

Fold an A4 piece of paper in half or create a 4-sided digital page. On those four sides, you can draw, collage, Photoshop, scrapbook or paint your zine – whatever floats your boat 😜

You can find some hints and tips on zine-making here

Ideas for the content of your zine:

  • Document factual information, e.g. an exploration of the wildlife that calls the river home

  • Come up with a poetic response, e.g. an ode to the river

  • Devise a fictional narrative, e.g. a storyboard for a film that takes place there

Tips:

  • Look online and in books about the river - what can you find? What did the river look like in the past and what was it used for?

  • What’s the river’s journey? It starts in the Mourne mountains, travelling down to the weir and into the sea. What does it pass on its journey?

  • How might the river look in the future? What would you like to use the river for? Swimming or an aquatic garden for example?

Once you’re happy with your zine, then send photos of your pages or scan of your zine to boats@pssquared.org Please include the name of your parent or guardian and their contact details in the email.

Prizes:

  • The winner will receive a special trip on a speedboat along the river Lagan for up to 3 people.
