River celebration: the culmination of WATER WORKS

Saturday 3 August 2024, 11.30am – 2.30pm

Join us for 10,000 boats – big and small!

Processions, performances, paddling pools!

Music, waves, boatbuilding, ropemaking, temporary tattoos, info and education stalls, refreshment stalls, boat clubs, water safety… water-way to have a good time!

What is this event about?

We’re holding this celebration because - in this city built on water - we all care about our rivers: their power, their vulnerability, and their visibility; the risks of rising sea levels and flooding, versus the major environmental efforts that mean we’ll be able to swim in the river Lagan in 20 years’ time. We want to demonstrate care for our major river through the offering of gifts in the form of boats, and a myth (which it doesn’t currently have) that is crowdsourced from the reflections and aspirations of Belfast’s citizens.

We really hope that you can join us to celebrate our waterways and the creativity of people in the city’s community groups, schools, residential homes, markets, artists’ studios, shopping centres, sheds, and kitchen tables.

How do I get there?

The location on the riverbank is really close to Lanyon Place Train Station. Ideally, we would like you to meander your way to the Lagan by navigating your way along some of the 12 tributaries that flow into it. We’ll be building momentum for our project finale by marking the paths of some of the rivers that exist in our city but have been covered over. Rediscover these little rivers and find your way to us!
